First day of the test event towards Rio 2016

velaThe regattas of Aquece Rio-International Sailing Regatta 2014 started in Guanabara Bay yesterday for the test event dedicated to the ten Olympic classes taking place in the same regatta fields that will hold the sailing competitions in the next 2016 Olympic Games. Among the three classes competing, two competitions have taken place both for Finn and for masculin and feminin RS:X windsurfing, thanks to a southerly wind of between 8 and 12 nodes. In the Olympic single, impeccable start for Jorge Zariff, the young home sailor who with a victory and a second place is at the head of the general classification ahead of English athletes Edward Wright and Giles Scott. Giorgio Poggi, the only azzurro in water, is at the thirteenth place with 13-10 partial positions. In masculin RS:X, Dutch Dorian Van Rijsselberge is at the first place after winning both regattas, ahead of Greek Byronas Kokkalanis and French Pierre Le Coq, in a ranking having Marcantonio Baglione at the 25th place (25-22).

Among the women, French Charline Picon is first ahead of Israelian Maayan Davidovich and Brasilian Patricia Freitas, while the azzurre are at the 7th place with Laura Linares (6-10) and at the 11th with Flavia Tartaglini (8-14). Today all the other classes will compete in water, with the athlete from Leghorn Francesco Marrai, fifth Italian athlete of the expedition lead by Technical Director Michele Marchesini, competing in the Laser Standard class. Taking part in the Aquece Rio-International Sailing regatta 2014, which will end on Saturday the 9th of August, are 320 sailors representing 34 nations.
