Federico Burdisso was not impressed by the Hungarian Kristof Milak, who set a new Olympic record in the 200 butterfly and was already the world record holder. Nevertheless, with a regular but effective race, the Italian won the bronze medal with a time of 1'54"45. The Hungarian won the race by stopping the clock at 1'51"25. Second place went to Japanese Tomoru Honda (1'53"73).
