History of FMSI

Constitution

The origin of the Italian Sports Medicine Federation is found in the work of Hugh Cassinis, director in 1925 of the first laboratory of physiology applied to sport in the Military School of Farnesina. In October 1929 Cassinis, member of the Medical Association of Physical Culture founded by Giacinto Viola, worked hard in order to get the mandatory visit to specialist approved doctors by professional athletes. In November of 1929 CONI accepted the recommendation establishing the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS). The first sports medicine course took place in Rome on 15 December 1929. In January 1930, the Sports Health Care Lodge to heal "injuries caused by doing sport" was created in Rome. On 24 February 1930, CONI approved the first statute of the Federation. Between October 1941 and 1945 FIMS was transformed into the medical service of CONI. On 1 November 1945, the Commissioner of CONI reformed the organisation into the Italian Sports Medicine Federation (FMSI).
