History of FCI

Costitution

The first velocipede race in Italy was held in Padua on 25 July 1869. The first modern bicycles began to appear in 1890 and regular track races were held in 1893. But the popularity of this new means of transport grew, particularly with the spread of tourism. The organisation generated from this movement of interest, the Unione Velocipedistica Italiana (UVI or Italian Velocipede Association), was founded in Pavia on 6 December 1885.

Immediately clashing with the Touring Club d'Italia (TCI or Italian Touring Club), founded in 1894 to promote cycling activities, the Association decided at the Congress of Verona of 1896 to dedicate its efforts to competitive activities. In 1890 UVI was amongst the promoters of the foundation of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the International Federation that had its first headquarters in Alessandria. The first success at a certain level was achieved by Francesco Verri at the Giochi del Decennale (the Decennial Games) in 1906, whereas the most important race, the Giro d'Italia, was held for the first time in 1909 and was won by Luigi Ganna. The Federation is listed in Law no. 426 of 16/2/1942.
