History of FPI

Costitution

The first boxing match, in the modern sense, was held in Verona on the 1 May 1909. Pietro Boine of Genoa was a true pioneer of Italian boxing. On 10 July 1910 in Valenza, Piedmont, he also became the first heavyweight champion, albeit for Northern Italy. Boine founded the "National Boxing Club" in 1912 in Milan. During the same period in Rome the "Boxing Academy" was opened by the American James Rivers.

Around these two focus points, a wave of interest developed which led to the establishment - with the encouragement of the Italian Athletics Federation - of the Federation, which took place in Milan in March 1916, during the war: Gian Domenico Roseo became its first president. The FPI is such an organic structure only in 1919 and the Italia team took part for the first time in a tournament during the Inter allied Olympics at Joinville (1920).

The Boxing Federation became part of the CONI in 1927. The first European title of an Italian boxer was that of Erminio Spalla (1923), the first world title was that of Primo Carnera (1933), both in the heavyweights. The Federation is listed in Law 16.02.1942, n. 426.
